Navy athlete attempts for guinness record with 500 km race walk

Manjula Ranaweera who is attached to the Navy is looking forward to a new Guiness record by completing 500 kilometres of race walking that commenced on Thursday at 12.30 a.m. from opposite Giritale Maha Vidyalaya in Polonnaruwa.

The 34-year-old sailor initially completed covering a distance of 100 kilo metres and will race walk in four stages from Giritale to Habarana and back. Ranaweera hopes to cover the distance of 500 kms in 64 hours in four days of walking which will be under the watchful eyes of the sports officials who are to recommend his achievement to the governing body to ratify it as a Guiness record for race-walking.

He is expected to finish the walk on Sunday at Jayanthipura where a special ceremony is arranged by the Navy along with other sponsors of the area who have come forward to support him for the event and greet him on his great achievement.
