CR and FC played some scintillating rugby to trounce Police SC by 38 points (6 tries, 4 conversions) to 17 (2 tries, 2 conversions, a penalty) in their Dialog Premier League rugby encounter played at Police Park yesterday.
The red shirts made some piercing runs and timely passes as they ran in six tries that left the Police defence in tatters.
It was Police who opened scoring in the fourth minute when the CR forwards were found not behind the advantage line. Sachith Silva put over the kick from 24 metres out for the first points.
Thereafter it was all CR who ran in four tries within twelve minutes to give them a score of 26 points.
Reeza Refaideen started the avalanche of tries in the eleventh minute through a three-quarter move. Tarinda Ratwatte failed with the difficult conversion.
Kavindu Perera dashed through about 35 metres to score their second try five minutes later after Omalka Gunaratne created the try by joining the line and finding the opening.
Forward Shehan Diaz scored two minutes later when CR opened out the game followed by Chamod Fernando who touched down four minutes later running over 30 metres along the touch line.
All these tries were converted by Ratwatte to give them 26 points.
Police scored next when Udara Sooriyapperuma fell over the line after a few controlled mauls as Amitha Prabath converted.
Police mounted another similar move near the CR goal line and on being deprived of a try through unwarranted play, Police were awarded a penalty try. With that they increased their tally to 17 points as CR led 26-17 at half time.
CR did not have it all that easy in the second half and were made to fight hard for their points. Refaideen received the ball midfield and ran through for a try but it was not allowed due to an infringement.
CR scored again when the Police full back failed to collect clean and knocked-on and in his haste kicked the ball in front of him. This was collected and a move created by CR who took advantage and Kavindu Perera scored his second try.
Ratwatte converted to give CR 33 points. They scored again in the 53rd minute when a Police player knocked-on and CR scrum half Rahul de Silva collected and ran through for a try which Ratwatte failed to convert but CR enjoyed a comfortable 12 points lead until the end.
