Siyane Tharu Sports Club, Gampaha won the Dialog President’s Gold Cup volleyball title by defeating Balares Sports Club, Colombo 3-0 yesterday at the National Youth Services Council Courts Maharagama.
The first few minutes was evenly contested as the Balares players fought back to close the gap 20-19 at one stage. But the Gampaha players once again took control to score five consecutive points to win the set 25-19.
At the early stage of the second set it was Balares who got ahead and at one stage they were well placed with the score reading 10-5. Then Siyane Tharu spikers came up with another brilliant performance to collect points regularly to level at 14-14. Siyane Tharu players took charge of the set from there onwards until they closed on 25-20.
Siyane spikers came back for the third set with full confidence and took control of the set from the beginning and finished the set comfortably at 25-18 to take the set and the match to annex the Dialog President’s Gold Cup for 2018.
The women’s Open saw MAS Casual Line, Kurunegala being declared as Champions as their opponents Vijaya Sports Club, Kosvadiya conceded a walk-over. According to reliable sources four players from the Air Force who were to represent Vijaya SC were not granted leave to play in this game.
Though Casual Line SC were declared winners of the Gold Cup there were no awards for the best players. An Official from Casual Line said after reaching the final with an unbeaten record his players were deprived of showcasing their talents in final.
In the Under-22 women’s category Alamoana Sports Club from Kegalle defeated Ratnapala SC from Mahauswewa three sets to nil.
In the same age group Dammissara Sports Club of Nattandiya beat Rajasinghe Sports Club from Ruwanwella to take the men’s under-22 Championship.
