Bangladesh wants Hathurusinghe back?

The Bangladesh Cricket president Nazmul Hasan’s eligibility standards fuel the noise around Chandika Hathurusingha’s return as Bangladesh’s head coach, with Hasan in a way confirming that they indeed have Hathurusingha on the radar, and will pursue his candidacy only after the end of the upcoming Bangladesh-Sri Lanka series.

Hasan has said that the management is looking to fill the vacant head coach’s role with someone who has worked with subcontinent teams before, more so at the national level.

“We have started the process to find a head coach, a fast-bowling coach and a physio,” Hasan said on Wednesday (July 24). “Since the ODI series is about to begin, we are not allowed to talk to Hathurusingha. He will become a candidate when there’s a break after this series if he expresses his wish to come. We want a coach as soon as possible. We are in talks but some of the coaches are still involved in their present jobs.

“My first preference is that the coach must have national team coaching experience. We are also looking for someone who has previous experience with subcontinent teams. We are looking for coaches outside those who applied too. Top coaches have to be contacted through agents, so we are pretty much using all our avenues.”

Perhaps the only roadblock to Hathurusingha returning is his current contract with the Sri Lanka Cricket, which has him bound for 16 more months. But it might so happen that Hathurusingha might be asked to step down with other coaching staff in the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s dismal show at the World Cup. Sports Minister Harin Fernando has said that he expected the entire Sri Lankan coaching staff to step down, taking responsibility for poor World Cup performance, but there’s been no official word as yet.
