Sri Lanka lacked lustre on day two of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series second leg in China yesterday, being thrashed by Japan (twice) and Hong Kong to finish fourth.
After a brilliant opening day in which they beat Korea 28-5 and Chinese Taipei 26-17, they had no answer to Japan in their final pool match being humbled 37-0 with the Asian giants scoring seven tries.
There was more misery in the Cup semi-final against Hong Kong who whipped them 55-0 while there was no change in Sri Lanka’s fortunes in the 3rd/4th play-off against Japan who eased to a 40-nil victory against the hapless Lankans.
China stunned Japan in the Cup semi-finals 14-7, but Hong Kong won their first Cup since 2017 with a 14-7 triumph in the Cup final. Sri Lanka Women’s team fared even worse finishing a lowly eighth after going down to Singapore 15-10 in the 7th/8th final. Beaten by Hong Kong (22-7) and Malaysia (20-5) on the first day, they ended their pool matches winless after a 46-0 mauling by China yesterday.
Thailand overcame the Lankan lasses 31-5 in the Plate semi-final while Singapore edged them 15-10 in the play-off.
Japan bounced back after being stunned by Kazakshtan in a pool match 19-12 to win the Cup final against China 22-17.
The 3rd and final leg of the Asian Sevens Series will be held on September 28 and 29 at the Racecourse grounds in Colombo.
